The “S-Class” of SUV’s according to Mercedes-Benz has just received full-on AMG treatment, which for most of us its a good thing. The boy’s back in Germany have done quite a lot to the GLS to make this. Starting up front with the powertrain. The new GLS63 makes use of the 4.0l Biturbo V8 as found in a few other AMG products however here its supplemented by an EQ boost starter-alternator good for an additional 16kw and 250nm. There is also a 48-volt electrical system. The standard output of the V8 is 450kw (612hp) and 850nm of torque. Can you imagine the feeling of acceleration in this behemoth?. MB claims it can dispatch the 0-100kmh sprint in 4.2-seconds and on to a limited 280kmh(AMG drivers pack).
Ride and Handling.
To get the power down the GLS uses AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system coupled with AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission. This 9-speed torque converter box allows for smooth progress and helps aid the 11.9l/100km claimed fuel consumption figure. The AMG GLS63 rides on standard fit 21″ rims which fill the arches nicely. The standard-fit AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension with special spring/damper set-up and adaptive adjustable damping ADS+ (Adaptive Damping System) keeps the body under control when driving enthusiastically. Having an air suspension also allows it to be very comfortable, this is an “S-Class” you know.
The inside is pretty much what you would expect from a top-end MB, sumptuous leather, loads of technology and plenty of customisation. Large clear drivers display and infotainment screen take care of all the main functions. There is also a variety of ways in which you can control these systems, from the touchscreen, touchpad, steering wheel and voice control using the “Hey Mercedes” command. We haven’t gotten any pricing yet but I suspect it won’t be cheap. So if you are in the market for a frankly massive 7 seat luxury family SUV that can also get everywhere in a hurry maybe chat to you local MB dealer. Just a side note, this does have some off-road ability but I’m sure it probably won’t be needed.
