For 55 years Ford has been producing the Mustang as a 2 door coupe preferably powered by a big old V8 or though other engines where optional. naturally, you would think if they were to expand the range it would be done by including something like a 4 door coupe. Well, it did come as a bit of a surprise when they introduced the Mach-E, an electric 4 door SUV!. The electric part was less of a surprise as that’s just the direction the world is going, however, the SUV body style is definitely a shock. Built-in Detroit Ford envisions the Mach-E will have the same impact on the world like the Model – T did but I am sceptical considering the competition there is today versus then.
So what has Ford created here? Well with starting off the range is the 190kw/255HP with 306lb-ft(417lb-ft for the AWD). Next is 332HP version which Ford claims is targeting the base Porsche Macan. Finally headlining the range is the GT version with 342kw(459HP) and 850NM(612lb-ft.) which according to Ford will have a mid-3-second 0-100kmh competing with the 911GTS. Ford is also targeting a range of 300 miles on a charge. The eAWD system developed for the Mach-E can send torque to the axle that needs it.
Ford has created quite a nice looking interior for the Mach-E with a large central screen in portrait orientation similar to Tesla. There is also a smaller digital instrument cluster for the driver other than that its a fairly uncluttered and neat interior. That central display measures a fairly large 15.5″ and features Ford’s latest Sync infotainment system with touch, pinch and swipe controls akin to most smartphones.
Finally, getting in and starting the vehicle is easy and effortless with Phone as a Key technology6, which makes its debut in the Ford lineup in Mustang Mach-E. Using Bluetooth, the vehicle can detect customers’ smartphone as they approach, unlocking the Mach-E and allowing customers to start driving without getting their cell phones out of their pockets or using a key fob. A backup code also can be entered on the centre touch screen to start and drive the vehicle in the event the phone battery dies.
