The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4Matic+ Coupé, wow try saying that 10 times fast?!. Well, the way this thing accelerates it will be long gone into the distance before you finish. It is actually quite astonishing how quickly a vehicle that weighs this much can go. Mercedes-AMG claims that this S version can hit 100kmh in 3.8 Seconds, that my friends, is almost supercar stuff. Can you imagine the sensation of being shoved into the seat while being that high off the ground? Well, I would definitely like to try. I still don’t get the point of these types of cars, “Coupé SUV’s” when the standard SUV versions have all of the performance and practicality. I suppose if its the looks that are that important to you then it does. Don’t misunderstand me this is a very attractive car.
Powering this sexy behemoth is AMG’s tried and tested 4.0l twin-turbo V8 however there are two versions depending on whether you are driving the standard or S model. I believe most will opt for the S model and in that case, they will have 450kw(612HP) and a whopping 850nm of torque. This is enough to push the S all the way up to 280kmh which is electronically limited. There is also a starter/alternator slotted in between the gearbox and engine which not only handles the starting and charging of the vehicle but also provides an additional 250nm and 16kw. It is known as the EQ Boost starter-alternator. The GLE send the power to the ground via all 4 wheels and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9 Speed transmission. I think this will be a rather exhilarating car to drive.
The inside is definitely one of the highlights as with all new Mercedes products these days. This one is the same as most of the GLE range except for the addition of the AMG wheel and a couple of other extras. The large dual digital displays which provide all the possible information you could need. These displays also control most of the functions on board. The electronic trickery in this vehicle is vast.
The seven DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, RACE (exclusive to the S variant of the GLE 63 Coupé), Trail and Sand allow a very varied driving experience with a wide spread between maximum comfort and agile sportiness. The modes modify key parameters, such as the response of the engine, transmission, suspension and steering. The inclusion of sand and trail modes is quite funny for this car but I’m sure some will be glad to know its there. This pricing will probably fall in line with the competition.
